This year is off to a great start! I am getting to know everyone's personalities are we are beginning to work together quite nicely! Below are dates to remember, standards we are learning about and some other odds and ends!
Dates to Remember: 9/29/17- Early Release at 1:15. Our lunch time for ER days is 10:55-11:25 10/20/17- Early Release at 1:15. 10/31/17- Teacher Workday (Happy Halloween!) 11/3/17- Quarter 1 Report Cards go home! What are we learning about? Reading We are working on asking and answering questions based on fiction and nonfiction text. We are talking about thin questions such as 'Who are the characters?' and thick questions such as 'Why did the main character do this to solve the problem?' for fiction. Nonfiction questions would be 'How does this text feature help me understand the text?' and 'How does a shark camouflage in the ocean?'. We are also working on context clues. Example: Yesterday I had a cast put on my arm because it was broken. If students did not know what the word cast means, how do they figure it out? What is the difference between an acting cast and a broken bone cast? Math We are currently learning how to add and subtract within 20. We are working on problems with unknown partners such as __+9=16. We are using number lines, making a ten and counting on in order to solve these problems. If you would like to practice at home, please let me know and I will send you links to videos with these strategies. We are also working on word problems such as: Sam built a block tower that is 9 blocks tall and Jamie built a block tower that is 13 blocks tall. How many blocks taller is Jamie's tower than Sam's? or Jack had some baseball cards. He went to the store and bought 8 more. Now he has 17 baseball cards. How many baseball cards did he have before he went to the store? Prodigy Students are using prodigy in our classroom for math with technology. This allows me to set what the students work on during the game as well as allow them to have fun battling magical creatures. They are allowed to play about 20 minutes a week at school, so if they also play at home that is great too! Let me know if you have any questions about Prodigy! Information about field trips and homework will be coming next week, 10/2(hopefully). As always, please let me know if you have any questions! :)
